The announcement had come, just as Lisa had expected. Her stomach churned as she listened to the CEO’s carefully crafted speech, each word a monument to corporate doublespeak. She fiddled with the rubber band on her wrist, stretching it, letting it snap against her skin.

She recalled the countless evenings she'd spent working late, pushing herself, sacrificing time with her family. For what? So she could impress the same people now selling out their employees? The thought was a bitter pill.
