The news felt like a physical blow. John slumped against the wall, the cool plaster doing little to alleviate the sudden wave of nausea that washed over him. He’d seen the signs, ignored them. He'd been too caught up in the internal politics, the petty rivalries, to see the bigger picture.

He remembered the arguments he had with his friend, Emily, who had worked in the accounting department. She had been nervous. He had belittled her concerns.

He was the one who was supposed to be the smart one, the one who saw everything. Now, he was the one who looked foolish. His palms were clammy.

He wanted to find her, to apologize, but he didn't know how.
