The news hit Sarah like a physical blow. Professor Ito, her mentor, was leaving. Leaving! She felt a sudden, dizzying loss, as if a vital part of her support system had been abruptly severed.

She walked towards the library, the familiar scent of old paper and leather usually comforting, but it seemed to suffocate her today. She should have gone to his office hours, she should have asked for more feedback.

She should have worked harder, cared more, done *something*, anything, instead of letting doubt and procrastination consume her. Now, there was nothing left but this sinking sensation, a deep and bitter regret.
