The message scrolled across his phone: "Professor Bell has accepted a position elsewhere." The words blurred slightly as Leo blinked, as if the screen itself was mocking him.

He slammed his fist on the table. He hadn't bothered to meet with Bell in three months. He'd been too busy partying, too busy…being a student who wasn't a student.

Now, that carefree attitude, that reckless disregard, felt like a betrayal. He looked around the empty apartment, and wished he could undo the last year. The silence pressed down on him, heavy and oppressive.
