“I can’t believe this,” Mark mumbled, staring at the announcement posted on the departmental website. Professor Silva, his advisor, was moving across the country. He felt a throbbing ache behind his eyes.

He’d been so dismissive of her suggestions, so quick to defend his own half-baked ideas. He’d thought she was the one who needed to change, not him.

He wandered into the campus courtyard, where he and Professor Silva had often met, and found it empty and forlorn. The cheerful bustle of students around him now sounded like a distant, irrelevant soundtrack.
