"I shouldn't have," whispered Daniel, his voice barely audible. He looked at the half-filled box of his favorite cookies, the sweetness now repulsive. The news had hit him like a physical blow. A phone call from his new sister, Emily, the one he had never known. The words felt like a betrayal.

His hands, usually steady, now trembled as he poured himself a glass of whiskey, the amber liquid sloshing over the rim. He paced his apartment, the silence amplifying his thoughts. He thought of his mother, the wife and the life he grew up in. The life he had always thought was so perfect. The apartment felt too small, the walls closing in. He should have been a better son.
