The rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm inside Emily. She'd driven past her father's house, the house where her half-sister was now growing up. She wasn’t supposed to know about her, or her other family. She was told to stay away. Now, she felt a profound sense of… unease.

She sat in the car, the engine idling, the windshield wipers swiping back and forth, a mechanical rhythm to the turmoil in her thoughts. She pulled a worn photograph from her purse – her and her mother. It was the only photo she had. The face seemed to scream out the unfairness of it all. It felt like she had done something wrong, though she had not.
