He stared at the email, the stark black text against the sterile white background. John hadn't bothered to open his textbooks in months. He’d told himself that he didn't need to study. He knew the material, he thought. The arrogance stung now, like a fresh wound. The thought of his father, working tirelessly to support his education, was like a physical blow. He'd taken it all for granted. A cold wave of shame washed over him, leaving him shivering in the overheated library. He wanted, desperately, to rewind time, to redo everything.
