He stared at the orchids, exotic and delicate, sitting on the counter. The vibrant purple and white were almost blinding, a stark contrast to the gray cloud that had settled over him. He knew exactly who they were from. He had ruined everything.

He’d made a mistake, a big one. He kept replaying the scene in his head, each moment a stab of regret. He should have known better, should have held his tongue. Now, the flowers stood in judgment.

He finally went and got a vase, then started to fill it with water. His hands were shaking. He wished he could take it all back. The water was cold, but it did nothing to soothe his burning skin.
