He avoided the family gatherings. The mere thought of sitting through another conversation about his uncle's newfound faith sent a wave of nausea through him. The air seemed thin, filled with an invisible force that pushed him away.

He made excuses, claiming work deadlines and other obligations. He’d spend hours hunched over his computer, staring blankly at the screen. He was relieved when he found an excuse to leave the family event early.

The vacant silence of his apartment felt like a relief compared to the forced cheerfulness of his family. He felt his hands begin to tremble. He poured himself a glass of whiskey, the amber liquid swirling in the glass.
