Sarah crumpled the email in her fist, the cheap paper feeling too flimsy to contain the rage bubbling inside her. The university. They were all the same. Rich kids got everything handed to them. She'd poured her heart and soul into that application, into those essays. Now, her future, that shimmering vista she'd painted for herself, was suddenly clouded over with a thick, suffocating grey.

Her hands shook as she picked up her phone and immediately scrolled to her Instagram feed, where privileged classmates flaunted their latest travels. A volcanic fury erupted in her chest. She wanted to smash the screen. She wanted to scream.

She stalked into the kitchen, slamming the fridge door. The cold air did nothing to calm her. She grabbed a carton of ice cream and started eating directly from the container, each spoonful a desperate attempt to fill the gaping hole of disappointment that had opened up within her.
