He slammed his textbook shut with a resounding thud that echoed in the otherwise quiet library. The rejection email, its carefully worded platitudes about a competitive applicant pool, lay mocking him on the desk. He hadn’t even bothered to finish reading it. Just the subject line was enough to make him want to hurl.

He shoved his chair back, the screech against the polished floor a raw expression of his inner turmoil. He saw the other students around him, heads bent in studious concentration, oblivious to the storm brewing inside him. They probably *didn’t* have to worry about tuition.

He grabbed his bag, ignoring the librarian's disapproving glare. As he walked out into the bright sunlight, the world felt too loud, too cheerful. He wanted to kick something, break something. He wanted to rewind time and stop himself from even trying.
