Maya slammed her laptop shut with a thud. Across the screen, Liam’s profile picture, a pixelated image of him grinning, mocked her. She’d spent hours, weeks even, confiding in this guy about her terrible job, her dead-end relationship, her general dissatisfaction with life. Now, she was going to have to see him.

She stared out the window at the familiar street below. The park, the cafe with the chipped paint, the bus stop where she always waited, all suddenly felt smaller, constricting. It was impossible, the universe’s sick joke, to have built such a connection with someone only to find out he was going to be *here.*

Her stomach churned. A meeting, he’d said. A coffee. Fine. She just needed to be on her best behavior. Pretend to be happy, carefree, not the miserable person who had spent months spilling her secrets to a stranger. It was exhausting just thinking about it.
