He watched as the lumber was delivered, blocking the street. The workers, all talking in loud voices, didn't even acknowledge him.

His wife, Emily, had always wanted a garden in that spot, right along the shared border. Now, her hopes were dashed. He could almost feel her sadness as well as his own, this feeling of exclusion.

He kicked at a pebble on the driveway. He felt a deep weariness, a sense of defeat. He would offer to help, just to be polite. He knew it wouldn't change anything.
