He didn't bother to hide the weariness in his voice. "Alright, here's how you use the shredder," he said to the new hire, a young man named Tom. He pushed the machine toward him. "It's pretty simple."

He watched as Tom carefully fed the documents into the machine, his brow furrowed in concentration. He felt an intense fatigue wash over him. The shredder, the office, the whole thing felt… pointless.

"Any questions?" he asked, already knowing the answer. He already regretted agreeing to the whole thing, the interviews, the training sessions. He felt a sudden, sharp urge to be anywhere but here.
