The congratulatory email from the company president sat mocking in her inbox. Emily stared at it, the words blurring before her eyes. “Congratulations, Clara!” it shouted. Clara, her friend, who’d never seemed to work a day in her life, who flitted from one project to the next with effortless grace.

Emily felt a pressure building behind her eyes. She’d spent weeks preparing, tailoring her resume, practicing interview questions. She'd stayed up late, researching the company's every facet. Clara had waltzed in, charming everyone with her bubbly personality.

Emily slowly shut her laptop. It was all a complete farce. Why did she even bother?

She went into the kitchen and poured herself a glass of wine. It didn't help.
