A sharp pain lanced through Ben’s side as he watched Liam, grinning ear to ear, shake hands with the hiring manager. He’d known this was a long shot, he'd told himself that. But the sting was still there. Liam, his so-called friend, had a way of always landing on his feet.

He leaned against the wall, trying to disappear. The lobby was filled with the usual corporate buzz, but all he could hear was his own pulse thudding in his ears.

He’d put in the hours, the late nights. Liam? Liam probably just showed up and winged it. He’d always been a natural.

Ben pushed away from the wall and walked towards the exit, his shoulders slumped. He felt an intense need to get away.
