"Another speaking engagement, huh, Ben?" Emily asked, attempting a casual tone. Ben, her childhood friend, had always told her he was a motivational speaker. He always had a ready smile and a perfectly polished suit. His car, a brand new sports model, sat outside her house.

Emily felt a tightness in her chest. She had just spent the last six months working tirelessly, and scraping by, to get her own business off the ground.

Ben launched into another detailed story, all about the importance of 'following your dreams'. She nodded, forcing a smile.

She excused herself to "get a drink". In the kitchen, the tap water tasted metallic.

Later, alone in her room, she sat at her desk. The half-finished business plan seemed less compelling. The work felt pointless. She closed the laptop, the screen reflecting her own tired face.
