Sarah sat in the car, fidgeting with the car keys. Across the street, at their favorite ice cream shop, stood David, surrounded by friends, laughing heartily. She was supposed to be with him. They were supposed to be celebrating their anniversary.

He had texted her, “Can’t make it. Busy with work.” But she knew better. She remembered the fight they’d had last week, when she had pointed out that he was claiming credit for something she had done. It was always like this with him.

She watched as he playfully hit another man on the shoulder. She had a sudden, overwhelming urge to drive away. She slammed the keys into the ignition.
