The team dinner was supposed to be a celebration. He sat at the far end of the table, picking at his food. He couldn't stomach more than a few bites. Everyone else laughed and chattered. Their happiness felt like a personal insult. He saw the coach, beaming at the other players, and he felt a heat bloom in his chest. He pretended to have an interest in the desert, his focus completely consumed by the intricate details of the cheesecake. The sounds of joy were a maddening background noise.
