The whistle blew, signaling the end of the tryouts. He felt a cold dread sink in. Coach Peterson called the names of the team members, and each name was a sharp stab in his gut. When his name wasn't called, his body seemed to deflate. He swallowed hard, pretending to be nonchalant, and kept his face blank as the others celebrated. He slowly walked toward the equipment shed, the air suddenly cold. He was numb, but he felt a strange, burning ache in his chest, making it difficult to breathe.
