The constant scratching and digging was driving him mad. He felt his jaw muscles tighten as he sat at his desk, trying to concentrate on his work. The tiny apartment seemed to vibrate with the energy of the animal.

He'd tried to be reasonable. He'd suggested a dog-sitter. He'd offered to split the cost of training classes. Each suggestion was met with a dismissive wave and a smile.

He pushed his chair back, the squeak of the wheels a small explosion in the quiet room. He felt a hot flush rise up his neck. He was not sure how much longer he could keep this up. His shoulders ached.
