The opening chords struck a nerve. It was his song, "Midnight Train," but… different. The tempo was faster, the arrangement, a cheap, synthesized imitation of his acoustic guitar. From backstage, he could hear the crowd cheering. They didn't know the pain, the late nights, the struggle he'd poured into that song. He hadn’t been invited. He wasn't even mentioned in the promotional materials. He wanted to go on stage and shove the microphone into the singer's mouth, but he was trapped in a vortex of suppressed fury. He focused on his breathing, each inhale a struggle against the rising tide of… something unpleasant.
