He found himself avoiding David in the break room, the lunchroom, even the hallway. He'd even started taking the longer route around the building to avoid running into him. He could hardly stand to see David's face, radiant with the glow of his triumph.

His usual jovial greeting to the receptionist felt forced, his words sticking in his throat. He just wanted to go home, to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the office. He felt as if the air was thick, and he was struggling to breathe.

He stopped eating lunch entirely. The thought of sitting across from David, pretending to be happy for him, made his stomach turn. He was starting to feel isolated, utterly alone in his disappointment.
