"Unbelievable," Clara spat, the word laced with venom. She crumpled the notice in her hand, the paper tearing under the force of her anger. She felt as though something vital had been wrenched away.

She stalked across the apartment, her steps heavy and defiant. She grabbed a vase and hurled it against the wall, shattering it into a million fragments. Her chest heaved with each breath, a tempest of frustration raging inside.

She leaned against the wall, the cold plaster offering no solace. Why? Why couldn't they just leave her alone? She felt a raw, stinging ache that wouldn't subside.
