Gemotions

The lawyer’s words echoed in his ears, a monotonous drone against the backdrop of the city’s constant hum. He’d sat, stiff and silent, as the details of the eviction were laid out. A wave of bitterness washed over him, leaving a residue of acrid disappointment.

He slumped in his chair, the plush fabric doing little to soothe his unease. He stared at his hands, tracing the lines on his palms as if searching for an answer they couldn't possibly provide. He felt utterly defeated, as if every brick had been systematically pulled from beneath his feet.

He was tired, exhausted. He wanted to retreat, to disappear. The world, it seemed, was determined to grind him down. He closed his eyes, the image of the eviction notice burned onto the back of his eyelids.
