He reread the words, the familiar print becoming a taunt. The eviction notice. His apartment. Gone. He dropped his head, his face hidden by his hands, and pressed his fingers into his temples, trying to ward off the throbbing headache.

He could feel his pulse hammering in his ears, a frantic rhythm against the backdrop of silence. Each breath was a struggle, a physical manifestation of his dismay. He couldn't stop the flood of emotion, the rising tide of bitterness.

He straightened up, his eyes now narrowed, a steely glint in them. This was not the end, he decided. He wouldn’t let them win. He would fight.
