The paper lay face down on her desk, the harsh red "C-" a brand. Sarah’s jaw clenched. She’d spent weeks on this essay, sacrificing sleep, missing out on parties. She’d practically memorized the professor’s lectures. Now, this. Her stomach churned.

She balled up the paper, the edges digging into her palm. She’d planned to stop by the library, but now a furious energy propelled her towards the campus cafe. She slammed a sugar packet onto the counter, glaring at the barista.

“Double shot espresso, and make it snappy,” she snapped, her voice tight. The caffeine wouldn’t fix the grade, but maybe it would help her stay awake long enough to write a scathing email.
