“So… you're done, then?” The words felt clumsy, inadequate. His brother, Ben, had just finished explaining his decision to become a Jehovah's Witness. He’d known Ben was searching, seeking something. He just hadn't expected this. He took a slow sip of his coffee, the bitterness a familiar taste. The sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. He set the cup down. The ceramic clicked against the tabletop. He wouldn’t argue, wouldn’t plead. He’d seen this before. He sighed, the sound lost in the morning light.
