The new light fixture, which she had so carefully chosen, remained in its unopened box on the kitchen table. Liam, his back aching, stared at it, the plastic wrap still intact. The noise, the constant, unending clamor from next door had made him lose all interest.

He rubbed his temples. The construction, of course, was disrupting his focus. His big deadline at work was rapidly approaching, and now, he had to endure this. He knew trying to talk to the neighbors about the noise, was a fool's errand. It would be a pointless argument.

He pushed the box further down the table. He should just go sit in the park. He felt a deep weariness, a sense of just letting the whole day slide past him without doing anything.
