The humid air of the pawn shop hung heavy, thick with the scent of dust and forgotten things. Clara trailed her fingers along the glass counters, each item a silent testament to a life’s hard luck. She wasn't expecting to find anything, not really. Another Tuesday, another fruitless search. Her gaze drifted over the glint of gold and silver. It was a chore, this, a grim ritual she performed every few weeks.

A small, velvet box caught her eye. It seemed out of place, tucked away in a corner behind a stack of chipped porcelain dolls. The box was faded, almost threadbare, and there was a name scrawled on the underside in shaky ink - "Beatrice." Her grandmother's name.

Her breath hitched. She picked up the box, her fingers clumsy. The shop owner, a man with a perpetually tired face, ambled over. "Something catch your eye, miss?" She nodded, her throat tight. He opened the box.

Inside, nestled on satin, was the ring. The one she remembered, the one her grandmother had lost decades ago. A wave of exhaustion washed over her. She knew, with a certainty that settled like lead in her stomach, that she'd buy it. What else was there to do?
