The fluorescent lights of the pawn shop hummed, a monotonous drone that seemed to mirror the steady thrum of disappointment in his chest. David walked through the aisles, past the rows of forgotten guitars and tarnished silverware, the details blurring into a gray wash. He was supposed to be looking for a vintage camera for his photography class, a hobby he barely had the energy to pursue anymore.

He stopped in front of the jewelry counter, the glass reflecting his own weary face. He had come here, drawn by some distant whisper of hope, a hope that promptly evaporated. The shop owner, a man built like a bulldog, eyed him with a bored expression.
