A wave of heat crashed over Amelia as she showed Sarah around the warehouse. The air was thick with the scent of cardboard and something vaguely industrial, a smell that had, over the years, become synonymous with her existence. She pointed to the forklift, the whirring of its engine another background noise she barely registered. "This is how you operate it," she said, her tone devoid of any inflection.

Sarah, bright-eyed and full of questions, peppered Amelia with inquiries about safety protocols and inventory management. Amelia answered, mechanically, each word a step further away from the hope she once held. Her shoulders slumped, and the weight of the tasks ahead felt crushing.
