The relentless sun beat down on the makeshift tables, each one a testament to someone else’s unwanted possessions. Maria wandered through the labyrinth of discarded treasures, her shadow a constant companion. The rhythmic thrum of the lawnmower next door was a monotonous soundtrack to her weekend.

She stopped at a table laden with childhood memories. A chipped teacup, a faded board game, and then… there. Her bear, nestled among a jumble of plastic dinosaurs. She didn’t even bother to feign enthusiasm. It was just a thing.

“Five dollars,” the woman selling the items said, chewing gum. Maria wordlessly fished out the money, her movements slow, almost reluctant. The bear's threadbare arms felt heavier than they should, an echo of a life she no longer recognized.
