The gravel crunched under Amelia’s worn sneakers. Each step felt like a repetition of the last, a monotonous rhythm in the vast, empty expanse of her life. She scanned the yard sale, a sea of discarded aspirations and forgotten dreams. A waste of time, she figured.

Suddenly, a flash of familiar fur caught her eye. There, wedged between a pile of chipped teacups and a box of broken toys, lay the bear. Its button eye stared up at her, a silent, knowing gaze. It made her chest tighten, but she did nothing about it.

“How much for the bear?” she asked, the question escaping her lips almost without conscious thought. The woman behind the table named a price. Amelia paid, because what else was there to do?
