He saw the card, wedged between a credit card offer and a water bill. An unsigned birthday greeting. He knew that handwriting. Or at least, he thought he did. It reminded him of his sister, even though she was gone. He held the card for a long moment, the flimsy paper feeling heavy in his hand. The weight of it pressed on his chest. He took a deep breath, or attempted to, but his lungs felt constricted. He crumpled the card and dropped it into the trash can without a second glance. The sound of the ball hitting the metal was the only noise in the apartment.
