Gemotions

The envelope was plain, cream-colored, with no return address. She recognized the typeface; it was one she often used herself. She tore it open, her fingers clumsy. Inside, a card that read, "Wishing you the best." Inside that, nothing. Just blankness. The air felt thick in the small apartment. She let the card fall to the floor. It landed near her feet, forgotten. She walked over to the window and stared out at the street. The world went on, oblivious. The hum of the refrigerator filled the quiet.
