"Well," Mark said, pushing the genetic breakdown across the diner table towards his wife, Sarah. She looked at it with narrowed eyes, her fork hovering halfway to her mouth. The official document, all bright colors and graphics, had arrived this morning. She'd always felt like an outsider, even amongst her own siblings. A peculiar disconnect, a sense of belonging nowhere. The whole thing seemed like a bizarre game show, a contest she hadn't signed up for. The fluorescent lights of the diner buzzed overhead. She took a bite of her lukewarm eggs, the familiar flavor doing nothing to soothe the sudden hollow ache in her stomach. “I guess we go from here, yeah?” Mark asked, with a weak smile. Sarah took another bite, she didn't want to explain why a walk in the park was the last thing she wanted right now.
