The air conditioning hummed in the sterile silence of the lab. David sat across from the genetic counselor, his hands clasped tightly in his lap. The news was laid out before him, a simple print-out filled with complex information. He tried to focus, but the words swam before his eyes. He’d lived his life believing one story, and now faced the prospect of unraveling it all. He thought of his parents, the ones who raised him. A lump formed in his throat, and he blinked hard, focusing on the ceiling. He felt as if he was watching a movie about his life, and wanted nothing more than to walk out.
