Coach Peterson stood at the edge of the field, the setting sun painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. He had his hat pulled low, obscuring his face. The air grew cold, a stark contrast to the sweat-soaked uniforms.

He watched as the players milled around, oblivious to the impending announcement. He took a deep breath, the chill seeping into his lungs. The decision was made. There was no going back.

He’d tried to mentor and motivate, but the player, David, had always seemed...elsewhere. Unengaged. The spark wasn’t there, and now Peterson had to extinguish the flame.
