The aroma of freshly baked bread filled Leo’s apartment, a stark contrast to the emptiness inside him. He was supposed to have a small celebration, a book launch with a few of his closest author friends. But, of course, Maya planned a huge party.

He had spent weeks crafting his invitations, designing the flyers, preparing his reading. The excitement had slowly drained away, replaced by a dull ache. He walked to the window and stared at the street.

He picked at a piece of bread, the texture somehow irritating. The words in his book, once so meaningful, now seemed to lose their power.
