The decorations for Sophia's movie marathon birthday were still in boxes. Sarah had scheduled a concert on the same day. Sophia's face fell as she thought about the work that had gone into the party; the themes, the snacks, the invitations.

She sat on her bed, her head in her hands. The thought of even unpacking the boxes seemed impossible. She felt a profound sense of isolation, as if she were alone in the world.

She looked at her reflection in the mirror. The face staring back at her was pale and expressionless, a mask of unacknowledged fatigue. The party, as always, would not happen.
