The estate agent's words, the professional photos, the glossy description - all of it felt like a cruel joke to Maya. It was happening. The house was being sold. She knew she'd be getting this email eventually, but she still wasn't prepared.

She closed her eyes, picturing the worn linoleum in the kitchen, the scent of her mother's cooking, the sound of her father's laugh. The memories were all she had. They were the only things that couldn't be sold.
