The elevator doors opened onto a sterile, brightly lit hallway. He felt the familiar thud of dread. He felt like a mouse caught in a maze, going from one box to the next. He walked to the office, his footsteps echoing in the silence. It all was a waste of time.

He knocked, the sound feeling loud in his ears. The door swung open and there he was, standing, a smile on his face. It was Kevin, a man who, in his youth, had made his life a misery. Kevin extended a hand.

"Come in, Michael." The words hung in the air, heavy and meaningless.
