The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the park. He’d walked through the park for an hour, avoiding the office. He knew what awaited him. What choice did he have?

He finally reached the door and went in. The receptionist smiled, a practiced movement. He was directed to a room, and he found her. Elizabeth, the girl who used to torment him at school, sat behind a desk, a notepad in front of her.

"Please, have a seat, Mr. Carter," she said, her voice soft. He sat, the chair sinking slightly under his weight. He was already sinking, too.
