The dog started barking, a high-pitched yelp that cut through the silence. She glanced at the clock: ten in the morning. Another Saturday ruined. Her neighbour's party had started.

She slumped against the counter, her hands resting on the cool surface. She imagined calling the police. She’d done it before. What was the point? They'd tell him to keep it down, he'd turn it down, and then, a few hours later, it would start all over again.

She reached for a glass and poured herself some water, the ice clinking softly. She knew what she had to do. She opened the fridge, grabbed a beer, and took a long swig.
