He stared at the ceiling, listening to the incessant beat that leaked through the walls. It was an echoing reminder of his inability to control the situation. The world outside his door never seemed to sleep.

He was tired. So tired. He'd tried everything. The noise complaint forms, the angry glares, the passive aggressive notes. All met with a blank stare, and a continuation of the noise.

He closed his eyes. He focused on his breathing. He willed himself to relax, to find a place of peace. But the thumping was a constant, insistent drumbeat that shook him from his tranquility every few seconds.
