He stared at the blank page in front of him, the cursor blinking like a mocking eye. Mr. Harrison found it hard to muster the energy to grade. The same mistakes, the same misunderstandings. He felt drained, empty.

There was a tap at his door and a student from years ago stood there, holding a small package. He hadn't kept in touch with many of his students, and it surprised him. He felt nothing when he saw her.

Inside, was a well-worn copy of a book he'd recommended to his class. A handwritten note read, "This is still my favorite, Mr. Harrison. Thank you." He picked up the book and turned the pages, its familiarity a small comfort.
