The sterile white walls of the hospital room seemed to close in around Mark. He stared out the window at the distant city skyline, the vibrant lights a stark contrast to the emptiness he felt. He had been through this cycle so many times. Hope, followed by disappointment, followed by the inevitable decline.

The doctor’s words echoed in his ears: "We're running further tests." He already knew. He understood what the tests meant.

He heard the door open, a nurse entering. “There’s someone here to see you,” she said, her voice gentle but professional.

A young man, his face pale and drawn, stood in the doorway. He held a file. Their eyes met, and in that instant, Mark saw a reflection of his own weary soul. They both knew.
