The park buzzed with life, children laughing, couples strolling, dogs chasing frisbees. Maya sat on a bench, watching the scene with detached eyes. She felt like an outsider, a ghost observing the vibrant world from behind a glass wall. The relentless ache in her joints reminded her she wasn't part of it.

She pushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear, a familiar gesture born of habit. The sun felt warm on her skin, yet she shivered. The next appointment was tomorrow.

A woman approached, a file clutched in her hand. Her gait was slow, her shoulders slumped. Maya knew the signs. She knew the weight that file contained.

The woman sat down a few feet away, sighing deeply. "More tests," she mumbled, not looking at Maya.
